The Zahir
I was reading an amazing book today called The Zahir by Paulo Coelho (http://www.amazon.com/Zahir-Novel-Obsession-Paulo-Coelho/dp/0060825219). In it, the main character has found his wife has left him and he is a “free” man (although he is unsure where she disappeared to and why). He says something in his quest for understanding himself that I really loved- he discovers that while he was now free of practically all commitments, that it didn’t mean he was truly free. True freedom, according to him, is not the absence of commitments but the ability to choose and commit to that which truly serves you and your highest good.
This really sums out how I’ve been feeling being away from school (something I didn’t feel was serving me) and while I’m lacking the commitments that most people use to define their life (job, school)- I really feel the same way. In the end it’s all about finding what really serves you and once you can commit to that, you find freedom.
Really recommend that book, you may recognize the author as the same person who wrote The Alchemist. And I must say, I like this book much better.
